Benson was elected to the Mercer Island City Council in 2013. Born and raised in Seattle, he is the youngest of five children. Benson moved to Mercer Island over thirty-three years ago with his wife, Terry Mark. Their two children, Trevor and Brittney, went to Pixie Hill Preschool, Lakeridge Elementary, Islander Middle School and graduated from Mercer Island High School. Trevor and his wife, Leeching Tran Wong, have now moved back to Mercer Island and Brittney and her husband, Rich Gong, live in the Greater Toronto Area.
After graduating from Seattle’s Franklin High School, Benson went back to the East Coast for college (Yale University) and law school (University of Pennsylvania). He has practiced business law and real estate law at the Seattle law firm of Keller Rohrback L.L.P. for over thirty-four years and has served on his firm’s executive committee for the past several years.
Prior to joining the City Council, Benson was actively involved in the community. Among the Island organizations that he served on were the Mercer Island Schools Foundation Board and the Mercer Island Community Fund Board (serving two years as its President). Some of the off-Island organizations that Benson served on included fourteen years on the Washington State Public Stadium Authority Board that helped construct the CenturyLink Field and the adjacent Event Center as part of a public-private partnership. He also served for three years, including a term as president, on the Washington Public Affairs Network Board a.k.a. TVW (Channel 23 on the Island). In 2012 the TVW Board awarded Benson its Founder’s Award.
